(ECNS) – Kuomintang (KMT) Honorary Chairman Lien Chan on Tuesday received two Xiaomi smartphones as gifts from Guo Jinlong, secretary of Beijing's Municipal Party Committee, the Taiwan-based Central News Agency reported.

Lien met with Guo in Beijing and received the smartphones with the words "Mainland and Taiwan join hands to make profits from the world" printed on the back.

The gifts are Redmi phones, a new brand launched by Xiaomi.

According to Beijing Daily News, Lin Bin, president of Xiaomi, revealed that Redmi was chosen probably because it was the result of cooperation across the straits.

"The smartphone was designed and marketed by the mainland, but it was manufactured by Taiwan companies," Lin said.

Lien arrived in Beijing with a Taiwan delegation on Monday, and met with President Xi Jinping on Tuesday afternoon.

His delegation's visit to Beijing will go through Thursday.

Fan Liqing, a spokesperson from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said Lien's visit was "significant to enhance communications across the straits."
