(ECNS) – DNA sequencing is a laboratory process that can detect vulnerabilities to inherited diseases, but it may not be accessible to the public in China in the near future, according to the Beijing News.

China's Food and Drug Administration and the National Health and Family Planning Commission have jointly issued a ban on genetic testing for clinical application before regulations and standards have been launched.

An official with the food and drug administration said clinical DNA sequencing has been among the tests offered at some medical institutions, yet the equipment and reagents used haven't been registered or approved.

Du Bing, president of the Beijing Health Management Association, said DNA testing hasn't been listed among authorized medical technology in Beijing, and that a standard for how much to charge for the tests hasn't been set either.

According to advertisements on the Internet, a number of medical institutions and companies provide genetic testing for tumors, hypertension, and diabetes genes, with charges ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of yuan.
