Nanjing shop scores big selling books by weight

(ECNS) -- At a folk culture fair in Nanjing, a stall has come under suspicion for selling books by weight as if they were vegetables, the Nanjing-based Jinling Evening News reported.

Since it launched the marketing strategy, the stall has sold at least 250 kilograms of books a day.

Prices vary for different kinds of books: inspirational books go for 22 yuan ($3.63) per kilogram, children's books 30 yuan ($4.94) per kilogram, and calligraphy books 50 yuan ($8.24) per kilogram.

The manager of the operation said that none of the books are pirated.

Many customers have spent more than 50 yuan, despite doubts that buying books by weight is cheaper than buying them online.

One customer changed his mind after his selected books were weighed. "I often buy books online, and I have a rough understanding about the prices. After they weighed the books, I realized that the prices here are much higher than discounted books for sale online."
