Elevator in mountain gets to top in 48 seconds

Liuzhou (ECNS) -- An elevator built inside a 272-meter-tall mountain in Liuzhou, Guangxi province can take tourists from the bottom to the top within 48 seconds, the local civil air defense office said on Monday.

The elevator can accommodate 13 people and has a carrying capacity of 1,000 kilograms.

At the top of the mountain is a fan-shaped viewing deck with a radius of 6.2 meters. The deck can hold 30 guests.

Hiking to the top of the mountain requires time and energy, and many tourists give up halfway.

Construction of the elevator began in 2011. A total of 49 million yuan (US$8 million) has been invested in the project.

The elevator is the second built inside a mountain in China.
