(ECNS) -- A migrant worker couple in Chengdu, Sichuan province, felt overwhelmed after winning a Benz Smart in a raffle because they couldn't afford to pay the high taxes on the vehicle and no one in the family can drive a car, the Chengdu Commercial Daily said on Tuesday.

Chen Hailin, a farmer from Jianyang, Sichuan province, and his wife have been working in Pengzhou, a county-level city under Chengdu, for four years.

On Jan 1, Chen and his wife joined a promotion campaign hosted by a local textile mall after buying a set of bedding for 208 yuan ($34.40).

Based on the rules of the campaign, anyone who spends more than 100 yuan can get a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes. Chen got two tickets and left his contact information at the mall.

On Jan 3, Chen received a call from the mall saying he had won a car worth 105,000 yuan in the raffle.

"At first I was happy to hear the news. I couldn't believe that I was so lucky," Chen said.

However, Chen's joy quickly turned to sorrow after he was told that he had to pay 40,000 yuan before taking the car.

The payment includes taxes on the purchase of the car and vehicle registration fees.

Then he reported his situation to the newspaper on Monday, with the hope that the newspaper can help him get the vehicle.

Chen said he eventually decided to sell the vehicle, since no one in his family can drive, and they can't afford to pay the fees.

Chen said he wanted to sell the car for 80,500 yuan.
