(ECNS) -- The Zhengzhou Metro has promised to provide free rides for senior citizens if they present ID cards or senior cards, but one citizen said he was also asked to show his property ownership certificate, according to China National Radio.

According to the policy, local citizens over 60 years old can take free rides during holidays and off-peak periods on weekdays. But many citizens say they were rejected, even though they presented the necessary identification at some stations.

Liu Guangle, chief of the local ID card management office, responded that they had informed all stations to ensure that the elderly receive the benefits.

"Senior citizens can take free rides as long as they register at the entrance of each station with ID cards or senior cards," said Liu.

However, the metro company reportedly changed its mind again, requiring seniors to present both their ID cards and hukou accounts.

Free metro cards for the elderly will be issued in April, according to the policy.
