(ECNS) -- Guangdong border guards and Hong Kong police have jointly shut down a 40-meter tunnel connecting Hong Kong and Guangdong province, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

The tunnel, 1 meter high and 0.8 meters wide, begins at a garage in Ganglian village of Shenzhen, and ends at a dike on a border river, the exit surrounded by weeds.

It's equipped with lighting and exhaust fans, and investigators estimated it cost at least 3 million yuan ($494,100) to build.

The owner of the garage said it was leased to a man in August, and it was later discovered that he used a fake identification.

Investigators estimated smugglers dug the tunnel for four months, removing the earth inch by inch.

Officers said the tunnel was designed with the intention of smuggling electronic products and luxury goods.

The investigation continues.
