(ECNS) -- Gene of fox meat was detected in a package that was supposed to contain cooked donkey meat sold at a Wal-Mart store in Jinan city, Shandong province, the Yangcheng Evening News reported on Monday. 

A consumer surnamed Wang said he bought the so-called donkey meat, but found it looked and tasted strange. He then sent it to an official testing institute. 

The institute concluded it was fox meat, Wang said. 

Wang asked for compensation from a Shandong-based producer but the producer refused him. China's Food Safety Law stipulates that such compensation should be offered up to a maximum of 10 times the value of the food. 

The producer, claiming there was no problem with its product, suspected Wang of blackmail as he had purchased 1,600 packages. 

Although fox fur is sold at high prices, meat of the animal is cheap, since fox meat smells, said a fox breeder surnamed Xue. 

Fox meat is sometimes sold at only two yuan (0.3 US dollars) per kilogram, Xue added. 

The fox meat could also pose health risks to those who eat it, he said.
