Restaurant in Beijing accepts bitcoin

(ECNS) – A restaurant in Beijing has begun accepting bitcoin as a form of payment since the end of last month, the Beijing News said Thursday.

A customer who consumed at the restaurant, which is located at Joy City shopping mall in Chaoyang District, paid his 650-yuan bill with 0.13 in bitcoin.

Customers can pay their bills by transferring bitcoins to a designated account, a waiter at the restaurant said.

Statistics from a currency atlas website show that over 1,400 physical shops in the world accept bitcoin. Most are based in the US and European countries, and less than 20 are in China.

But quite a few online stores in China have accepted the digital money. Jiasule.baidu.com announced its support for bitcoin in October. Around 200 items currently on taobao.com can be purchased with it.

A bitcoin was traded for US$1,117 on Wednesday on Mt. Gox, an online platform for bitcoin transactions.
