(ECNS) – A Chinese-American entrepreneur has co-invented a patrol robot designed to replace the everyday security guard, according to Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po.

The 5-foot-tall, 300-pound K5 Autonomous Data Machine looks like a hybrid of R2-D2, a robot character in the "Stars Wars" films.

Equipped with a video camera, a thermal sensor, a laser range finder and radar, the machine can feed real-time on-site data.

William Sanrana Li, co-founder of Knightscope, which created the machine, said schools with the robots may no longer need human guards.

Enterprises or schools just need $6.25 per hour to employ the machine, lower than the average minimum wages per hour of $7.25 across the country or $8 in California.
