Expert suggests retirement at 65 for all in 30 years

(ECNS) -- Delaying retirement should be carried out gradually over the next 30 years and be first implemented for women, said a professor at Renmin University of China, Beijing Times said Tuesday.

Zheng Gongcheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, made the remarks at a forum held by the university on social reform.

He said retirement age should change in line with social development and longer life expectancy, adding that more people are choosing to delay retirement.

Meanwhile, it is evitable that the next 20 years will see labor shortages, Zheng said.

He advised that making the retirement age the same for men and women was "a matter of gender equality."

With gradual enforcement of the policy, in 30 years, women and men will retire at the age of 65, he said.

He also suggested an incentive mechanism ensuring that people get a higher pension if they work longer.
