(ECNS) -- Shoes installed with GPS long-distance locators were launched at the Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology on Wednesday.

The shoes are designed to help caregivers keep track of seniors who wander off.

Each pair of the shoes has a unique quick response code (QR code). By downloading an app, smartphone users can link to the shoes with their phones.

To protect user privacy, the shoes also have verification codes, said Huang Haiqiao, an expert at the Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology.

The built-in GPS locater in the shoes can help family members quickly locate where lost people are, Huang added.

Though an elderly-oriented product, such smart shoes will also be used in children's footwear to help parents keep tabs on their children, said Xu Jingxian, a technical director of the product.

The shoes will be sold online and in stores in the second or third quarter of 2014. Each pair will be priced between 1,000 and 2,000 yuan (164-328 US dollars), Xu added.
