(ECNS) -- The Emperor of Japan on Wednesday granted a Japanese red ribbon medal and a certificate of merit to Chinese student Yan Jun, who saved a Japanese boy from drowning in Osaka in September.

The medal and certificate were granted to Yan by the Cabinet of Japan on behalf of the emperor.

The certificate reads: "Emperor of Japan praises Yan Jun's courageous behavior of saving others and disregarding his own safety and the danger involved." The certificate is also marked with a seal of Japan.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will also invite Yan to visit his office on Wednesday evening.

Yan, 26, has been widely praised for rescuing the boy from a local river when Typhoon Manyi swept through Osaka.

Yan found the schoolboy while jogging along the river, where the water level had increased due to overnight rains brought by the typhoon.

Yan jumped into the water and pulled out the drowning boy after several attempts to grab his hand. He eventually succeeded in the rescue about 100 meters downriver, returning to the embankment and using a rope provided by local residents.

Yan Jun is an exchange student and will enter a PhD program at a university in Osaka next year.
