2,300 Beijing condom machines out of service

(ECNS) – More than 2,300 condom vending machines in Beijing have vanished, the Beijing Youth Daily reports.

The machines had been installed as part of a project launched by the Chinese government and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) to promote reproductive health and family planning.

Ailunsi, the company which was in charge of installing and maintaining the machines, said they had stopped providing the service.

To help fill the gap left by the machines, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Population and Family Planning has launched new self-service machines to provide free condoms. Citizens can get a free box of condoms every 20 days with their ID cards.

A service hotline for the machines was turned out to link a kindergarten.

About 600 new machines have been installed at universities, hospitals, and communities. Another 600 will be installed by the end of the year, and 1,100 are expected to be installed next year.

Citizens can get free contraceptives by three means: from self-service machines; from designated places such as neighborhood committees, community public health stations, and large-scale enterprises and institutions; and from online orders, which require consumers to pay delivery fees of one or two yuan.
