ABC makes formal apology for offensive skit

New York (CNS) -- The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) has issued a statement on its website apologizing for a talk show segment that has been widely considered racist among the Chinese community.

In a press release titled "Statement on behalf of ABC Entertainment and Jimmy Kimmel Live!" dated Nov. 8, the broadcaster also promised to strengthen its review process and take more steps to "prevent this type of issue from happening again," according to Xinhua News Agency.

Hua Junxiong, executive vice president of the New York-based China Peaceful Unification Promotion Association, attributed the apology to coordination by the Chinese community in the US.

Hua said Chinese communities in major cities coordinated their efforts and launched a nationwide movement, thanks to young people and social media.

Protests by Chinese Americans have gotten attention from mainstream media in the US, including the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and CNN, Hua said.

In those protests, no one clashed with police and no trash was left at those spots, Hua added.

A petition on We the People, a White House website, created on Oct. 19 had received more than 100,000 signatures by last Thursday.
