(ECNS) -- An investigation by the City University of Hong Kong shows that five kinds of different animal genes are detected in beef balls sold in Hong Kong.

The investigation found samples of beef balls tested positive for DNA from cattle, buffalo, pork, chicken, and horsemeat.

Since the price of beef has been on the rise, the cost of making meatballs with beef has also become higher. Some meatball manufacturers mix in other meats to reduce costs.

Some manufacturers make beef balls with soy protein isolate mixed with water, oil, and beef flavors.

Netizens in the mainland said teasingly, "We feel balanced, since now we finally know that people in Hong Kong also suffer from food safety problems."
