(ECNS) – A cluster of ancient tombs that were estimated to date back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770BC-221BC) were discovered at a construction site in Miluo city, Hunan province, and a bronze sword is particularly striking, according to the local Xiaoxiang Morning Herald.

More than 60 cultural artifacts were discovered in 23 tombs. Among them a 50-centimeter bronze sword is still in exquisite condition, with a sharp blade and shiny handle.

"It is montmorillonite that helped preserve it," said a researcher surnamed Wang from the local heritage administration office, referring to clay minerals that expand when they absorb water.

It's a typical cluster of family tombs, according to Wang.

Archeologists said the tombs would help in the research of local history.
