'Half UK students would fail math on China's CEE'

Beijing (ECNS) – A photo comparing the geometry requirements for freshmen at UK colleges and Chinese candidates for college entrance exams has shocked foreign scholars.

The picture was displayed at the 6th Beijing International Forum on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which lasts from Tuesday to Thursday.

The image shows that UK freshmen must compute the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle. But Chinese college candidates must decipher a more complex geometric figure with little assistance.

Zhang Li, director of China's National Education Development Research Center, who displayed the picture, said "half of the UK's college candidates would fail the math on China's college entrance exam, but the equivalent exam in the UK can be solved by seventh-grade students in China."

But a lot of problems still exist in China's education system, according to Zhang.

Students' power to pass exams is not equal to their learning ability, Zhang said, and quality-oriented education differs from region to region in China, which requires sustainable development.

China has set a goal to realize modern education by 2020, according to its national education plan. China's colleges and universities have engaged in establishing an online education platform, which can change their education models and create a bridge for everyone to pursue lifelong learning, Zhang added.
