HK netizens take anger out on dead mainlander

(ECNS) -- Dozens of netizens in Hong Kong vented their anger against mainland immigrants by posting abusive remarks on the tragic death of a young mainland woman, according to HK-based Wenweipo.

Stephanie Liu Han, 25, from Yunnan province, who graduated from the University of Hong Kong and worked in the financial industry, was knocked over by a truck in Hong Kong and died at the hospital earlier this month.

Liu's tragedy was posted and updated by her friends on social media sites, such as Facebook and Weibo, and they were shocked to find abusive comments on the social media pages.

Liu's page received as many as 2,700 "likes" and many expressed negative feelings toward other students from the mainland.

One post even calls Liu and other mainland students "locusts" and says they grab education resources and steal job opportunities in Hong Kong.

Wenweipo criticized the coldness and bigotry of the small group of Hong Kongers, adding that more than 40 percent of Hong Kong's population comes from the mainland, becoming the mainstream and making great contributions to Hong Kong's prosperity.
