(ECNS) – The local government of Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou province, on Friday confirmed that 837 college students had been involved in the demolition of an illegal construction on Oct. 12, the Beijing News has reported.

The students were recruited as temporary security personnel by a local security company to maintain order at the demolition site, according to the government's investigation.

Three local officials have been removed from office for denying the students' involvement, the government said.

Li Ming, a sophomore at a local technical college who was involved in the demolition, said he got the "part-time job" information from a group on Tencent QQ, an online instant messaging service.

The job paid 80 yuan for half-day and required job applicants to wear camouflage clothing, said Li.

Some students involved said they didn't know they were going to work at a demolition site until they arrived.

The students said they didn't receive any training, but people in charge told them not to get involved in any violence, if it happened.

A female student who didn't want to be identified said she and her classmates have participated in six demolitions of illegal constructions carried out by the government since May.
