(ECNS) -- A 47-year-old villager in Baoding city, north China's Hebei province, has cut off his own diseased leg with a hacksaw and a fruit knife, according to local Yanzhao Evening News.

Zheng Yanliang was diagnosed with an unexplained arterial embolism in both legs in early 2012.

Unable to stand and suffering from skin ulcer spreading to his right leg, Zheng thought of cutting off the diseased leg.

"I couldn't afford a hospital amputation, and the village clinic refused to help me," Zheng said. "So I came up with the idea of cutting it off myself."

The ulcer stopped on his right leg but spread to the left one. His left foot broke off from the ankle because of the ulcer.

Zheng was concerned about being a burden to his family. He hopes to get help in beating the mysterious disease and get prosthetic legs.

With prosthetic legs, he could take care of himself and do some manual work to support his family, Zheng said.
