Aquarium blames mass fish death on camera flashes

(ECNS)— The death of 110 tropical fish at an aquarium in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region during the National Day holiday may have been caused by excessive exposure to camera flashes, according to youth.cn.

An employee at the aquarium in Liuzhou city said that more than 110 tropical fish died abruptly during the past holiday, when the aquarium received an influx of 10,000 visitors each day.

Cheng Shifa, head of the aquarium, said the dead fish include 54 different types worth a total of 60,000 yuan (US$9,804). A 1,000-yuan porgy from Japan was among them, he added.

Experts say that tropical fish living in dark environments will scatter in all directions when tourists use camera flashes, causing the fish to hit glass walls or rocks.

All tourists are notified not to use flash when taking photos of fish, but most ignore it.
