Henan bans use of foreign names for public places

(ECNS) -- Central China's Henan province has adopted a regulation that restricts foreign names from appearing in the names of local places, xinmin.com has reported.

People's names generally can't be used for new developments, including hotels, shopping centers, office buildings and residential communities, according to the regulation which comes into force on Oct. 15.

It also bans foreign names of people and places from being used to name locations in Henan.

Foreign names such as Manhattan, Venice and California have become popular in recent years at some local residential communities, the Henan government's legislative office has said.

Regulations issued by the State Council ban the names of state leaders from being used to name places nationwide, but it did not stipulate whether the use of foreign names was allowed or not.
