(ECNS) -- A Chinese student who jumped into a flooded river to save a drowning Japanese boy has been widely praised by local media in Japan, according to a Japan News Network report released on Monday.

On Monday afternoon, a 9-year-old Japanese boy, accompanied by two middle-school students, was trying to take pictures of an overflowing river in Osaka triggered by Typhoon Man-yi.

When the memory stick from his digital camera fell into the water, the boy tried to pick it up, but accidentally slid into the river. Then he was pulled 350 meters by the river's currents.

Yan Jun, of China, saw the drowning boy as he was passing by the river. He jumped in and helped the boy ashore.

Yan and the boy were sent to a nearby hospital, and both are in stable condition.

Yan plans to study for his doctorate at Osaka City University next spring.

Jiji News and several other Japanese media reported on Yan's heroic act. Some Japanese netizens praised Yan's courage, while others suggested police in Osaka give commendation to the warm-hearted Chinese student.
