(ECNS) -- A mother in northeast China's Shenyang city convinced her daughter for 13 years that she had been adopted, a ruse to keep the girl humble, according to the Shenyang Evening News.

The mother named Shen said she had lied to prevent her daughter from becoming a spoiled rich kid. Shen told the girl when she was in primary school that her biological mother was long dead, and that she would only support her till college.

Shen's plan worked, as her daughter studied hard and grew up into an independent girl.

Shen didn't tell her daughter the truth until the girl found a good job and got married this year after graduating from a prestigious university.

Although questioned by experts, Shen expressed pride in her teaching method, saying, "If I hadn't motivated her in this way, she might rely on her wealthy family background and have no courage to advance."
