Beijing's first reversible lanes to ease traffic

(ECNS) -- Reversible lanes, also called tidal lanes, will open in Beijing to relieve road congestion during the city's worst traffic month, according to an official at the municipal commission of transport on Wednesday.

The heaviest traffic congestion this year falls in September, due to a confluence of holidays, school start dates, tourism and other factors, said Liu Jianjun, a director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.

The road congestion will get worse next Tuesday, as the day will coincide with Teachers' Day, said Liu.

To ensure smooth traffic, the commission will open the city's first reversible lanes on Chaoyang Road, a thoroughfare on the city's east side.

The reversible lanes will allow traffic to move in either direction depending on certain conditions. Drivers are thus advised to pay attention to road signs at road conjunctions, Liu added.

The reversible lanes will open before next Tuesday.
