Beijing (CNS) -- New media such as social media and mobile media are penetrating almost every internet-connected home in the world. To embrace challenges brought about by the new media era represents an urgent task for leaders of the overseas Chinese media community.

The overseas Chinese media community, with its core businesses in traditional media such as newspapers, magazines and television programs, has borne the brunt of the growth of new media, according to Tao Xinyi, president of the Grupo Ouhua Medios de Comunicacion S.L from Spain.

"Transformation and reformation is the only way for overseas Chinese media to meet such challenges," said Huang Chengwei, chief editor of the A China Media Group from Australia.

The development of internet technology has changed the way information is disseminated. Social media platforms like Weibo and Wechat have also brought changes to people's daily lives.

"In the midst of the changing situation, many overseas Chinese media have reformed the way they spread information. They have opened official accounts on social media platforms to win support from more young audience members," said Li Sichao, chief editor of the Mirror News Weekly of Australia.

The biennial World Chinese Media Forum has witnessed such reform happening in the overseas Chinese community. The number of the meeting's attendees from the new media circle have also been on the increase.

"The upcoming forum brings us an opportunity to figure out the challenges faced by the overseas Chinese media community. We hope by attending the meeting, fresh directions for our future transformation and reformation can be found," said Zhao Xiaoyu, chief director of a Chinese weekly magazine from Argentina.

The Seventh World Chinese Media Forum will kick off in Qingdao, Shandong province on Sept. 7.

Hosted by China News Service every two years, it represents a grand gathering of Chinese-language media worldwide.
