(ECNS) -- A new Swedish study has found that a 45-minute or longer commute to work creates a 40 percent greater risk of divorce.

The researchers found the link between long commutes and broken marriages after combing data from more than two million Swedes between 1995 and 2005.

All that time on the road is stressful for commuters and takes its toll on families, according to the study.

The study has aroused debate among Chinese office workers, since a previous report shows that the average time urban residents spend commuting to work in China's first-tier cities stands at 41 minutes.

"It seems that we are not far from broken marriages," joked a Chinese netizen.

That report, released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, calculated the average time urban residents spend commuting to their workplaces in 50 Chinese cities where populations exceed a million.

In Beijing, a megacity of over 20 million people, a daily commute to work can take 52 minutes, the worst of all Chinese cities.

Experts suggest long-distance commuters should read books, listen to music, or chew gum to release stress while trapped in traffic congestion.
