(ECNS) – A Chinese immigrant has invested 10 million Canadian dollars (about US$9.6 million) to buy the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) Canada Fertility Center in Toronto, according to the Canadian Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao Daily News.

The investor named Wang Guangyu said in a phone interview that he once operated a hospital and a pharmaceutical factory in China to treat infertility, and that his goal is to make the center the best in Canada.

Wang Bin, technical manager of the center, said the annual turnover of infertility treatment has reached $60 billion in North America, second only to the weight-loss industry at $100 billion.

The center has helped push the success rate of test-tube babies as high as 73 percent, the highest in Canada.

The turnover has increased since Wang Bin became technical manager, said Li Yupeng, the center's executive director. Many Chinese-Canadian families have received treatment at the center, Li added.

Canada's first test-tube baby was born at the center in 1983, the same year it was founded.
