Shanghai imposes first 10,000-yuan fine for visa violation

Shanghai (ECNS) -- A foreigner who stayed in China illegally for 33 days was fined 10,000 yuan ($1,632) in Shanghai on Tuesday. It was the first fine for that amount since the new exit-and-entry regulation for foreigners was issued, according to immigration inspection officials at Shanghai Airport.

Foreigners staying in the country illegally will be given a warning before receiving fines, however fines in severe cases may be as high as 10,000 yuan and individuals could face detention between 5 to 15 days, according to the new law which took effect on Sept. 1.

The upper limit of the penalty has been raised to 10,000 yuan from 5,000 yuan.

The penalized foreigner was introduced to the new regulation by police officers and showed no resistance.

Officers at Shanghai Airport reminded foreigners in China to pay attention to the period of time permitted by their visas or residence certificates.
