(ECNS) -- Guangdong province plans to release electronic permits for those who travel frequently in and out of Hong Kong and Macao, according to the Hong Kong-based newspaper Ta Kung Pao.

Citing officials from the exit and entry administration department of Guangdong province, the newspaper said the electronic two-way permit will replace the current paper permit by the end of this year.

Each electronic card will carry fingerprint data and a handwritten signature, as well as a computer chip which keeps a log of all trips made, by which parallel traders can be easily identified, it said.

The electronic permit will still be checked by police officers at first, but an automated card swiping system is the ultimate goal, the newspaper said.

Long lines are commonly seen at Shenzhen Customs, where an average of 400,000 people enter Hong Kong every day. Guangdong has already provided self-service for qualified tourists, but only five percent use it.
