(ECNS) -- China need implement a real-name registration system for fixed-line telephone users, but the system won't pose negative impacts on their telephone communication, a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) official said on Wednesday.

"It's necessary for China to implement the real-name registration system because of telecom crimes and fraud," said MIIT spokesperson Zhu Jun at a press conference.

China's telecommunication industry has grown in recent years, and the risk to telecom users has also been on the increase, he added.

According to the MIIT's new regulations, all new telephone users in China are required to give their real names and national identification numbers when they apply for fixed-line telephone services or buy wireless internet cards.

The real-name system will guarantee the interests of both users and telecom operators, as well as lower transaction costs, said Zhu.
