(ECNS) -- The number of female Chinese nationals in Southern California who have applied for the Military Accessions Vital To National Interest (MAVNI) program has soared, as they hope to achieve citizenship by serving in the US military, World Journal (US) reported.

MAVNI program allows legal aliens with skills considered vital to national interests to join the army, which also provides an opportunity for expedited citizenship.

A military officer named Wang Qiang from the military enlistment processing station in Puente Hills Mall, City of Industry, said eight Chinese women have signed up for the military in the station, double the number of last year.

"It is a new trend that the number of applicants has increased," he said. "Citizenship is their first consideration."

A Chinese student surnamed Meng who has signed up for the military said she found it difficult to find a satisfying job after getting a masters degree in accounting in the United states. "I will benefit a lot from joining the army. Besides the advantages of citizenship, for example, scholarships will be given to those who go back to school after military service," she said.

An applicant named Wei Wei said military service is also helpful to her career. The position she applied for is related to her major, and she will get a vocational certificate after training in the army, she said.

A Chinese single mother who signed up for the military and refused to reveal her name, told reporters that it is a shortcut to citizenship, which will help her reunite with her child, who is still in China.
