Nanjing (ECNS) -- China's first patient infected with the H7N9 strain of bird flu gave birth to a baby girl at the No.1 People's Hospital of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province, on Wednesday.

The new mother surnamed Qiu had been pregnant for five months when doctors confirmed that she was infected by H7N9 last May.

After a month of treatment, her lung functions improved, and her vital signs became stable, according to the hospital. Examinations also showed that her baby's physiological indicators were at normal levels.

The hospital said both the mother and baby were doing well.
