Built on landfill, garden expo a green model

Beijing (CNS) – The ground beneath the Ninth China (Beijing) International Garden Expo, which was built on top of a landfill, is functioning normally after one month of operation, according to experts.

Since 1991, the landfill received construction waste from 2,000 trucks every day, resulting in a heavily degraded environment, said Chen Jun, a member of the expo's organizing committee, on Friday.

Pollution caused by landfills is a problem all over the world, but there are successful cases of management of such pollution, said Yan Degang, an engineer at the seventh subsidy institution of the China Aerospace Science & Industry Corp.

Inspired by the Fresh Kills Landfill in New York City, the institution is exploring new modes of dealing with waste through aerospace and construction technology, Yan added.

The 145-hectare landfill is beneath half of the expo garden area, with the deepest pit as much as 30 meters, Yan continued. Four kinds of construction methods were designed for the foundation and the slope, which doubled the original weight capacity by square meter.
