Suicide on the rise in Taiwan

A total of 3,766 people in Taiwan committed suicide in 2012, a rate of 16.2 out of every 100,000 people, according to statistics from the Taiwan health bureau.

The figures show an upward trend in suicides in the region for the first time in five years.

Among them, men outnumbered women: 2,430 Taiwanese males committed suicide, nearly twice as many as the females at 1,336.

However, the number of women who killed themselves last year increased by 19% compared to 2011. Women aged between 25 and 44 accounted for the biggest number, an official from the Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center said.

Starting in 1997, suicide ranked among the top ten causes of death in Taiwan for ten consecutive years, which led to the establishment of the Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center in 2005. Two years later, the suicide rate began to decline, and in 2010 it fell out of the top ten causes of death.
