Chengdu (CNS) -- Business leaders and government officials shared opinions about the development of western China at the 2013 Fortune Global Forum on Saturday.
In the past decade, western China has been developing quickly, and globalization of the region has also gained momentum. Against such a backdrop, a strategy of urbanization may boost the rise of the region, said Fan Gang, director of China's National Economic Research Institute.
One of the major features of urbanization is the development of infrastructure, said Ge Honglin, mayor of Chengdu.
Ge said that since Chengdu opened its express railway link to Europe, the city has gained a much more competitive logistics network compared to coastal cities.
The urbanization process also leads to a large number of farmers becoming workers, which contributes to urban construction, he said.
There should also be policies related to labor turnover and the confirmation of land rights for farmers, so that urbanization will contribute to the development of the western region, Ge added.
