Nanning (CNS) — Many Chinese gold miners in Ghana are leaving the second-largest gold producing country in Africa after becoming targets of looting and attacks by local residents, according to reports on Saturday.
About 80 to 90 percent of the miners come from Shanglin, a state-level impoverished county in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where news of the gold rush spread by word of mouth. Lured by money-making opportunities in Ghana, many have borrowed money at home to invest in local mining projects.
"Many people in our village have been to Ghana," Wen Lian'an, a Shanglin villager, told reporters.
Wen had initially planned to resume his mining business in Ghana after recovering from a foot injury he got during an attack by looters in March. But because of the insecure environment in Ghana, he has decided to return home and reunite with his family.
Li Haoyuan, a young miner from Shanglin, returned home after the recent crackdown by Ghanaian authorities on illegal gold-mining, which caused heavy losses to his mining business.
Altogether 169 Chinese workers allegedly involved in illegal mining were detained this week in the crackdown.
