Shanghai (CNS) -- China's film industry is growing at a compound annual rate of 15 percent, according to a report released by PriceWaterhouseCoopers on Wednesday.
The market scale of China's film industry will increase by a compound annual rate of 14.7 percent, to $6.5 billion by 2017, according to the report Global entertainment and media outlook 2013-2017.
The surge in theater construction in China has given a boost to the growth of box office returns, which are expected to grow by 15.6 percent to $5.5 billion by 2017.
With an average nine new screens opening every day, China's film-screening business is growing at a rate that is unparalleled in the history of the movie industry, according to the report.
Since 2002, when there were fewer than 1,300 screens in China, the industry has grown tenfold. By the end of 2012, China was home to 13,100 movie screens. Another 25,000 new screens will be added to the number within five years.
But even with 38,100 movie screens, one for every 220,000 people, China's film industry remains relatively unsaturated, said Jiang Xiaoping, a PriceWaterhouseCoopers partner.
In the United States, there is one screen for every 9,000 people, Jiang added.
