Beijing (CNS) -- A network of remote sensing satellite ground stations covering all of China's territory has been completed after 27 years of construction, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Wednesday.
The network comprises three ground stations in Miyun County (suburban Beijing), Kashgar (Xinjiang) and Sanya (Hainan).
The network can receive, transmit, store, process and distribute remote sensing data from satellites to obtain information from all of China's territory.
As an important national-level infrastructure for civilian use, and an important member of the international earth resource satellite ground station network, this network has so far received and stored up to 3.1 million satellite pictures since 1986.
It is the largest earth observation satellite database in China and one of the largest institutions for receiving and processing satellite data in the world, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Since it was set up some 20 years ago, the network has played an important role in securing major satellite data.
It has also provided continuous support to major national-level projects involving remote sensing data, and played a major role in disaster monitoring and evaluation.
