(ECNS) — With the help of the Crime Victim Protection Association, the family of Hung Shih-cheng, a 65-year-old Taiwanese fisherman who was shot dead by the Philippine Coast Guard last month, received compensation totaling 3.19 million new Taiwan dollars from the local government, Taiwan media reported on Wednesday.
The compensation includes NT400,000 dollars each for emotional distress for Hung's wife and five children, NT590,000 dollars for his wife's remaining years, and NT200,000 dollars for funeral costs.
Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou offered his condolences through a couplet.
Hung's oldest daughter, on behalf of the whole family, expressed their gratitude. She also expressed outrage and insisted Manila offer a formal apology, and demanded justice for her dead father and all Taiwanese fishermen.
Taiwan's prosecutorial authority said they will continue to assist Hung's family in demanding civil and criminal liabilities from the Philippine government. Once they get compensation from the Philippines, all the money will be transferred to the victim's family after deducting the 3.19 million.
Prosecutor Lin Qingzong said that he hopes the media will refrain from excessive speculation or exaggerated reports about the incident in order to facilitate mutual judicial assistance between Taiwan and the Philippines.
