Beijing (ECNS) -- Foreign companies are encouraged to open regional headquarters and research departments in China, the Ministry of Commerce said Tuesday.

Huang Feng, deputy director of the ministry's Foreign Investment Department, said at a press conference that regional headquarters can integrate businesses and promote upgrading of foreign investment.

Huang said the ministry has been mulling new policies to lure more research departments, to China.

More than 1,800 foreign research centers and more than 50 regional headquarters are operating in China, according to figures released at the conference.
