Guangzhou (CNS) -- More than half of citizens in China oppose delaying retirement and support the current legal retirement age, according to a poll released on Monday.
As for suggestions from experts to raise the current retirement age, a poll, conducted by the Canton Public Opinion Research Center, of 3,000 urban citizens found that 54 percent of respondents oppose it, while only 26 percent agreed.
When asked about opinions on retirement, up to 60 percent of respondents hoped to maintain the current retirement age, and 17 percent said they would like to retire early. Only 10 percent said they would delay retirement.
The poll also found that 10 percent of respondents 31 to 50 years old plan to continue to work after they reach retirement age, while a Gallup poll said up to 38 percent of Americans in the same age group plan to do so.
The current legal retirement age in China is 60 for male workers and officials, 50 for female workers, and 55 for female officials, according to a law passed in 1978.
