Urban management jobs attract educated applicants  

逾百名碩士海歸競聘上海城管引發熱議

擁有名校碩士博士學歷、海外留學歸來，擇業時卻選擇了城管工作，逾百名高學歷者爭當上海城管的消息近日引發熱議。

Shanghai (CNS) -- Chengguan, or urban management officer, has emerged as a hot position in Shanghai, as more than 100 highly educated applicants competed for positions in the latest round of recruitment by Qingpu district's urban management department in the city.

Of the 180 people selected for interviews to compete for 60 positions, many are from the country's well-known universities, some have study abroad background, with 119 holding postgraduate degrees, and two doctoral degrees.

In 2011, urban management staff in Shanghai began receiving the same pay as civil servants, which attracted many university graduates.

Bringing highly educated people into urban management has improved the quality of the team as a whole, said Li Guohua, director of Qingpu district's urban management department.

Thuggish behavior during crackdowns on small business owners accused of operating without a license have gained chengguan notoriety among the public, which the government has been working to change.

The public blamed the incidents on personnel with limited education.
