Macao (CNS) – Over 7,000 children applied at seven kindergartens under the Women's General Association of Macao this year, and only about 600 places are available. On Monday, the federation began registering those who won the enrollment lottery.
The age to enroll in kindergarten is three months and 3 years old. According to Macao's statistics, the region saw 5,852 new births in 2011 and nearly 7,500 in 2012. In just the past two years, there were over 13,000 children starting kindergarten.
How difficult is it to enroll in kindergarten in Macao? A director from the federation said one kindergarten has 50 spots but over 3,000 applied.
"It is even harder to enroll in a kindergarten than to win a jackpot," some parents said.
The region's social work bureau said that five new kindergartens, which would provide over 1,400 places, will open this year. That will bring the total number to 6,591, an increase of 30 percent from last year. But with the effect of "dragon babies", this year will continue to see kindergarten enrollment problems.
Parents can also choose half-day kindergarten, which may help to ease the problem, a kindergarten director said.
