Rescue still urgent in quake-hit Baoxing

伴隨著大批量救援物資的進(jìn)入，寶興不再是災(zāi)區(qū)的一座“孤島”。但目前，寶興的電力、通訊都還沒(méi)有完全恢復(fù)，在余震不斷、塌方不斷的情況下，剛剛開(kāi)通的道路隨時(shí)都有可能被再度阻塞，救援形勢(shì)依然緊迫。

Beijing (CNS) -- With the arrival of relief supplies, Baoxing county no longer remains isolated from the outside world after the devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Ya'an city, Southwest China's Sichuan province, on Saturday. However, both electricity and communications have yet to be restored and rescue effort is still needed as frequent aftershocks and cave-ins are likely to make the newly restored roads impassable.

Images show that over 60 percent of buildings in the county have been severely damaged, roads blocked and 38 landslide sites have been detected in the surrounding area.

China Telecom, a communications operator, has rushed to the quake-hit region to repair damaged cables. After several hours of intense work, landlines and broadband networks were completely restored.

However, rescue and relief efforts have been hampered by insufficient supplies due to impassable roads.

By noon on Sunday, five out of the nine towns in the county still lacked communication lines.

The three telecommunications operators in the region are planning to send satellite phones to the quake-hit region along with other rescue teams to address communications needs for directing disaster relief efforts.

Disaster monitoring of the county and its surrounding areas was done with the assistance of high-definition aerial remote-sensing satellites.
