(ECNS) -- Chinese were at the top of the list of foreigners who got US green cards in 2012, according to a report by World Journal, a daily Chinese language newspaper serving overseas Chinese in North America.
Statistics released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) show that 1 million people became legal permanent residents (LPRs) of the United States, and a total of 757,434 people naturalized in 2012.
The naturalization process confers US citizenship upon foreign citizens or nationals who have fulfilled the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
According to the DHS data, the leading countries of birth of new citizens were Mexico (102,181), the Philippines (44,958), India (42,928), the Dominican Republic (33,351), and the People's Republic of China (31,868).
