Beijing (CNS) -- Deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) worried that the high aims of local governments might hamper sustainable growth and cause an investment rush.
Of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities on the Chinese mainland, 24 local governments set growth targets above 10 percent, and 11 even aimed at increasing growth by 12 percent or higher, according to reports.
High economic growth targets may lead to an investment rush, which can add difficulties to development pattern transformation and structural adjustments, deputies said.
Cai Fang, an NPC deputy and director of the Institute of Population and Labor Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said local governments should focus on improving sustainable growth.
Bai Chong'en, an NPC deputy and associate dean of the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, said sustainable growth can only be achieved by improving quality and efficiency.
