購車搖號正在北京演變成一場全民運動。不管買不買車,咱一家人先進去搖著,不然等以后要買車的時候更搖不著”——這可能是在北京推行搖號購車政策后大多數北京家庭的心理寫照。
Beijing (CNS) -- Roughly one out of every 14 Beijing residents will participate in the next lottery for car license plates, according to the latest official estimates.
The lottery program received more than 1.42 million qualified applications by February 8, according to its website on Monday. Beijing's permanent population is 20.69 million, or about 14 times the number of applicants.
Lottery applicants have increased sevenfold since the government launched the program in 2011 to ease gridlock, and now only one out of every 77 people will win a new plate. A resident surnamed Zhu told reporters that five of her family members had played for two years, but none had won yet.
CNS learned that many restriction-wary residents who don't intend to buy a car immediately were applying to the lottery anyway, making it even harder for people to win plates.
Beijing will continue to limit new vehicle registrations through the lottery system next year, Li Xiaosong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, said last week.
