Changsha (CNS) -- The principal of a primary school in Hunan Province was killed yesterday while attempting to save a student from a knife-wielding attacker.
The assailant broke into the Beidu Primary School, located in Hunan's Xinhua County, at around 2 p.m., according to the county publicity department.
Third-grade students were at a PE lesson on the playground when the man clambered over the wall and attacked the child. Upon hearing the commotion, Yang Jianyi, the school's principal, tried to apprehend the man but was fatally stabbed.
The wounded student has been sent to a local hospital.
Local police say they are pursuing the killer and that the case is being investigated.
